Scrub Island

This private island is just off the coast of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. It's a quick walk (5 minutes) from the airport to Trellis Bay and then a complimentary resort ferry takes you over to the Scrub Island Resort.

We visited Scrub Island for Spring Break with 4 adults and 3 teenagers. The island is tiny - it has a resort with a few restaurants, a marina with a well-stocked provisions store, several pools, and a private beach. There are no cars on the island so you can walk or the staff drives you to the beach on the other side of the island.

Scrub Island is an active marina with boats coming and going during the day as well as stopping for the night. The best way to experience the other nearby islands is by boat or ferry from Tortola.

Here are the highlights from our trip, where to go, and the best restaurants:

• Get a boat captain for the day and sail around the BVI. Our favorite stops are Jost Van Dyke (don't miss the Soggy Dollar Bar and Foxy's!), the Indians (great snorkeling), Norman Island (stop for lunch or snorkel right off the island), and the famous Willy T's - a barge that has been converted into a 2-story floating restaurant. There is also great snorkeling right off Scrub Island and the Marina Cay Bar and Grill located on a small island right next to Scrub. Your captain can help you decide where to visit for the day but I would recommend a full day on the boat to experience several islands.
  

• Virgin Gorda - The Baths on Virgin Gorda is a famous natural landmark with giant granite boulders, hidden tidal pools, and amazing sea caves. You can spend the day relaxing at the beach and climbing around the huge boulders. There are shops and a restaurant The Top of the Baths so you don't have to pack a lunch. Take the ferry from Tortola over to Virgin Gorda (check the daily schedule and avoid cruise ship days) and then take a taxi from the ferry to the Baths. If you spend the whole day on Virgin Gorda, don't miss Coco Maya - one of our favorite restaurants in the BVI. You can have dinner and then take the last ferry back to Tortola (make sure to check the ferry schedule).
  

• Trellis Bay - located right across from Scrub Island, you can take the Scrub ferry over for dinner. We went to Loose Mongoose which was a fun outdoor restaurant with great food. There are several restaurants you can go to for lunch or dinner if you want some variety. Scrub Island only has 2 restaurants open for dinner, so if you're there for a week you should try Trellis Bay.
